Stenvakt: the homepage
Stenvakt is a Mac application for managing the security and updates of Linux servers you run yourself. It reviews each server's security and health, watches incoming connections through server logs, and applies patches and configuration changes. The app's key feature is safe mode: before making firewall or SSH changes that could lock you out, the server arms its own rollback timer, the app proves you can still log in with a fresh connection, and if that fails the server automatically reverts the change. Changes run in a safe order: checks first, then updates, then firewall and SSH, with reboot last. The app uses SSH with your existing keys and installs no agent on the server.
Stenvakt runs on Mac with Apple silicon and macOS 14 or newer. It is built and tested on Ubuntu and Debian, with support for AlmaLinux and Rocky Linux. The Free plan includes Review, Preview, and all fixes you apply yourself in safe mode. Pro adds Watch for ongoing monitoring and alerts, Autofix to apply safe fixes with one click, and Night shift for daily digests. Autopilot, coming soon, will add Polish: automated cleanup runs with proof. The app supports shared SSH access on servers where other people log in, and works with AI agents through MCP that must approve risky changes.

Can a firewall or SSH change lock me out?
Not with safe mode on. Before a firewall or SSH step the server arms its own rollback timer, the app tries a brand-new login, and if that login fails the server puts the old config back. If you were already locked out by hand, the server can still undo it.
Which Linux servers does it work with?
It is built and tested on Ubuntu and Debian. AlmaLinux, Rocky and other RHEL-family servers are recognised but not every fix covers them yet. You need SSH access as root or as a user with passwordless sudo.
Does it install an agent on the server?
No. Stenvakt logs in over SSH with the keys you already use and runs only what you approved. Nothing new listens on the server. A fix installs what it names, such as ufw, fail2ban or a docker-user-block service.
How is it different from Webmin or Cockpit?
Those are admin panels that run on the server and let you change almost anything from a browser. Stenvakt runs on your Mac, adds nothing that listens on the server, and focuses on finding what is risky and fixing it without locking you out.
Is there a trial for Pro?
Yes. Pro is on for 14 days when you first open the app, with no account. Monthly and yearly plans also start with 14 days free, once per account. Cancel during that trial and you are not charged.
