Quick answers
How do solar panels work?
Solar panels are made of photovoltaic cells, usually silicon. When sunlight hits a cell, it creates a flow of direct current electricity. That DC power flows to an inverter, which converts it into alternating current used by home appliances and the grid. The home is powered first; any surplus is stored in a battery or exported to the grid. Panels still generate power in cloudy weather but produce the most on sunny days.
Do solar panels work on cloudy days and in winter?
Yes. Solar panels run on daylight and keep producing even when overcast, though at a reduced level. In winter, shorter days and a lower sun angle reduce total daily production, though cooler temperatures actually make panels slightly more efficient. Systems are sized around yearly energy needs with grid connection or battery backup covering low-production periods.
What happens to solar panels in a power cut?
In most grid-tied solar systems, panels automatically shut off during a power cut due to anti-islanding protection, even if the sun is shining, to prevent feeding electricity back into the grid while utility crews may be working. Without battery backup, homes lose power just like neighbors. Systems with battery storage or hybrid inverters can disconnect from the grid and continue powering homes using stored solar energy.
