A tool that converts screenshots into structured JSON for terminal agents, enabling CLI tools to process visual information as text.

What it is

Screenshot of the SlimSnap homepage

SlimSnap: the homepage

SlimSnap closes the gap between terminal agents and visual information. When terminal-based AI tools like Claude Code, Aider, and Codex CLI need to discuss UI elements, users must write detailed descriptions instead of pasting screenshots. SlimSnap lets users capture, annotate, and convert screenshots into JSON that these tools can read, making terminal agents see what's on screen.

Capture any area with keyboard shortcuts or select whole scrolling pages. Annotate with arrows, callouts, and highlights to point at specific issues. Copy as JSON with one click and paste into any terminal agent or text-based interface. All processing happens locally on Mac or Windows with no uploads or server involvement.

The JSON output includes every element's text, position, bounding box, and color, plus OCR of all labels and messages. Long pages are split into readable frames. The schema is published under MIT license on GitHub, and users can build their own exporters or use the open Claude Code skill without the app.

Listed capabilities

  • Capture any area or whole scrolling pages with keyboard shortcuts
  • Annotate with arrows, callouts, and highlights
  • Autoscroll for long page captures
  • Supports Mac Apple Silicon and Windows 10/11

Quick answers

  1. Why not just paste a screenshot into ChatGPT?

Terminal agents like Claude Code, Aider, and Codex CLI do not accept images at all. SlimSnap solves this by converting screenshots to text-based JSON. It is also more reliable when agents need to reason about specific elements rather than interpret visual information.

  2. Does it send my screenshots to a server?

No. OCR runs locally on your own machine on Mac or Windows. Captures never leave your machine.

  3. Is it open-source?

The JSON schema is open under MIT license on GitHub, and the Claude Code skill is open. The Mac and Windows apps themselves are closed source.

  4. Can it capture a whole page, not just what's on screen?

Yes. Press the whole page capture shortcut and scroll through content yourself or use Autoscroll to let SlimSnap scroll automatically. Long captures are split into page-sized frames with one JSON covering the entire page in order.

  5. What does it run on?

SlimSnap runs on Mac with Apple Silicon and Windows 10 or 11 with the same features on both platforms. Linux support is not yet available.
