What it is

Ramback: the homepage
Ramback is a free Mac menu bar app that detects and stops simulators, emulators, Gradle daemons, containers and dev servers that consume RAM. It groups processes by type, shows which tool started each one and how long it has been idle, then stops them the way their own tools would—using simctl for simulators, adb for emulators, or docker stop for containers instead of force-killing them.
The app requires no account or credit card. Every install includes 14 days of Pro features; after that it reverts to Free automatically. Free features include viewing all running processes with their RAM usage, stopping processes, pinning favorites, the Clean slate button, dev server and agent rules, the disk scan, and a CLI and MCP server for agents. Pro ($19 once for 2 Macs) adds memory pressure warnings, simulator and emulator rules, undo functionality, and disk cleanup capabilities.
Ramback prioritizes safety: it stops processes gently first, asking before forcing anything that won't quit. Databases never stop without your confirmation, nothing mid-build is touched, and it never affects system or other users' processes. The app leaves your work on your Mac—process names, paths and projects stay local unless you opt into anonymous usage counts.

Quick answers
Is Ramback free?
Yes. The list, stopping, Clean slate, dev server and agent rules, disk scan, CLI and MCP server are free for as long as you use them with no account. Every install includes 14 days of Pro; when they end, Ramback reverts to Free automatically. Pro is $19 once.
How is it different from Activity Monitor?
Activity Monitor lists processes. Ramback groups them by type (simulators, emulators, Gradle daemons, containers, dev servers, agent sessions), shows which tool started each one and how long it has been idle, and stops them using their native tools (simctl, adb, docker) instead of a kill.
Is it safe? What does it never stop?
It stops things gently first using proper shutdown methods. If something is still running after 5 seconds, it asks before forcing it. Databases only stop after you confirm, nothing mid-build is touched, and it never touches root's processes, other users' processes or anything under /System.
Does it work with OrbStack, Colima or Podman?
Docker Desktop, OrbStack and Colima all work. The VM counts toward the total, and containers show their share of it, grouped by Compose project. Podman isn't detected yet.
Does it work on Intel Macs?
Yes, it ships as a universal binary. It needs macOS 14 Sonoma or later.
