MacScapes: the homepage
MacScapes is a live wallpaper app for Mac made by Neon Frenchie. It draws 42 animated scenes live on your Mac's graphics chip in any of 48 palettes, paired with desktop widgets, folder icons and ambient sound that match. Scenes are saved together as vibes, which can change on a schedule or at sunrise and sunset.
Unlike video wallpaper apps that play looping clips, MacScapes draws each scene as it plays, so there's no clip that restarts every few seconds and any palette can recolor it instantly. The entire app is about 26 MB with every scene included. Each scene is designed to a budget of about two milliseconds of GPU time per frame on Apple silicon, and drawing stops whenever windows cover the desktop or the display sleeps.
The app includes 14 desktop widgets tinted to match the active palette, 70 folder icon patterns, and 10 ambient sounds. It runs on macOS 14 or later on both Apple silicon and Intel Macs, supports multiple displays with different wallpapers on each, and works in the menu bar with global keyboard shortcuts.

Quick answers
How is MacScapes different from video wallpaper apps?
Video wallpaper apps like Backdrop and Wallper play recorded clips that loop and keep the colors they were filmed in. MacScapes draws each scene as it plays, so there's no clip that restarts every few seconds and any palette can recolor it instantly. The entire app stays about 31 MB with every scene included. MacScapes also matches widgets, folder icons and sound to the wallpaper, which those other apps don't. With Pro, you can also use your own video clips.
How much battery does it use?
MacScapes is designed to use as little battery as possible. Each scene is designed to a budget of about two milliseconds of GPU time per frame on Apple silicon, and drawing stops whenever windows cover the desktop or the display sleeps. On battery with Save energy on battery turned on, it drops to 30 frames per second at half resolution, and Pro can switch to a lighter battery vibe you choose.
Is there a free trial?
The free version is the full trial with no time limit, so you can try all scenes, widgets and schedules before paying. If you buy Pro and it isn't right for you, you can ask within 30 days for a full refund.
What data does MacScapes collect?
MacScapes collects nothing that identifies you. There's no account and no tracking across apps or sites. The app sends anonymous usage counts like which scenes are showing and when the upgrade screen opens, with a random ID that isn't tied to you; you can turn this off in Settings. Location is optional and only used for sunrise and sunset calculations. The weather widget asks MET Norway for a forecast for your approximate area.
