What it is

Ghostable: the homepage

Ghostable is a command-line tool and optional desktop app for managing encrypted environment variables and secrets alongside your code in Git. It stores encrypted values and signed access records in a .ghostable directory that travels with your repository, allowing developers, CI/CD systems, and other devices to decrypt only the environments they are authorized to access.

The platform requires no account, subscription, or hosted vendor to trust. Each device gets its own project-scoped identity with granular access roles for reading, writing, or approving configuration changes. Configuration changes are reviewed in Git like code, showing which environment and key changed without exposing the secret itself.

Ghostable includes features for validation schemas, access requests, revocation, rotation, process-only injection, output masking, and encrypted backups. The CLI is free forever and works on macOS, Windows, and Linux with any framework or hosting provider. Ghostable Desktop, an optional visual app, is available as a one-time purchase starting at $49.

Quick answers

  1. Is it safe to commit Ghostable files to Git?

Yes. Ghostable commits encrypted values, signed access records, and reviewable metadata. Keep plaintext .env files and private device identities out of Git.

  2. Can anyone with repository access decrypt our secrets?

No. Cloning the repository is not enough. Decryption requires an authorized device identity with access to that environment, or a scoped automation credential.

  3. Can I use Ghostable in CI/CD?

Yes. Give CI its own scoped automation credential instead of a human device identity, then grant only the environment and reader or writer role that job needs.

  4. Can I revoke a lost device or a former teammate?

Yes. Revoking a device removes its grants and rotates the affected environment keys. It cannot erase secrets that device had already seen, so rotate those underlying provider credentials when necessary.

  5. Do I need the CLI?

The CLI is the primary repository-native workflow for developers and CI. It handles encryption, access, validation, review, and running authorized processes from the terminal.
