Start This Task

What it is

Start This Task: the homepage

Start This Task turns overwhelming or vague tasks into clear, manageable actions. When you describe a task you're avoiding, the AI returns one concrete first step immediately, so you can start right away. While you begin, a full editable plan builds around it, which you can rename, reorder, add to, or break down further.

The tool offers three step sizes—Standard, Small, and Tiny—to match where you actually are. You can use Focus Mode to see one step at a time with a built-in timer. It's designed for people experiencing task paralysis, often associated with ADHD or executive dysfunction, though anyone can use it.

The service is free to try without signing up, with 15 guided breakdowns per month included. Founding Pro removes the monthly cap for $5.90/month.

Quick answers

1. What causes task paralysis?

Task paralysis happens when the gap between knowing you need to act and identifying a specific next action feels unbridgeable—not because the task doesn't matter, but because it matters and the path forward isn't clear. It is not the same as laziness.

2. How do I overcome task paralysis?

One research-backed approach is to narrow the task to a single, concrete first action rather than trying to plan the whole thing at once. Start This Task gives you that first step immediately, then builds a full editable plan around it.

3. Is task paralysis the same as executive dysfunction?

They are related but not the same. Executive dysfunction refers to a broader set of difficulties with planning, starting, and completing tasks. Task paralysis describes a specific experience—feeling stuck on a task you intend to do—and can be one way executive dysfunction shows up.

4. Can I edit the generated steps?

Yes. Rename, add, reorder, delete, or mark steps complete. The plan is a working draft, not a fixed prescription.

5. What if the first step still feels too hard?

Choose a smaller Step Size (Small or Tiny), or use the Break down feature on that step. Your current work stays visible while the tool finds a more startable action.
