What it is

Spend Brake: the homepage

Spend Brake is a proxy service that enforces hard dollar spending caps for paid APIs in real time. It intercepts API calls, prices each request before it is forwarded to the provider, and refuses requests with a 402 error if accepting them would exceed a cap.

The service protects provider API keys by never exposing them to client applications—instead, clients receive revocable virtual keys. It handles multiple scopes of caps (org, key, SKU, environment, agent, session, day, month) and enforces them atomically so parallel requests cannot slip past together.

Spend Brake includes built-in pricing for Google Maps Platform, Twilio, Mapbox, HERE, Tavily, Exa, Brave and SerpApi, with support for custom APIs. It offers features like kill switches, loop detection, budget alerts with webhooks, and session-based budgets for AI agents. It can be run as a hosted service billed monthly or self-hosted under Apache-2.0 license.

Quick answers

  1. How does Spend Brake differ from Google Cloud budgets and Maps Platform quotas?

Google Cloud budgets only alert and take hours to respond based on billing data, quotas count requests per API per minute or day without understanding SKU tiers, and neither stops spend before it happens. Spend Brake stops dollars in real time before the request leaves, priced per field mask with micro-dollar accuracy, and offers granularity down to individual keys, sessions and agent runs.

  2. What happens when an AI agent reaches its spending cap?

The agent receives one clear line telling it to stop and ask the user to raise the cap, not a quietly growing bill. Exit code 3 signals a cap was reached, allowing the agent to act on it. The agent can use brake commands to make capped calls and see the cost of each.

  3. How are provider API keys protected in Spend Brake?

Provider keys are stored encrypted by Spend Brake and never exposed to client applications. Each request is forwarded with the real key but responses are passed through without caching. Clients receive only revocable virtual keys that can be scoped to specific environments and sessions.

  4. Can Spend Brake be self-hosted?

Yes, the core is Apache-2.0 open source and can be self-hosted in five minutes using Docker Compose. Nothing phones home and licenses are verified offline. Business and Enterprise licenses add single sign-on, more roles, two-person approval, audit export and support for multiple orgs per install.
