What it is

RushDB: the homepage
RushDB is a database designed for AI agents and applications. It stores records with relationships and search indexes in a single Rust process. The key feature is a self-describing schema: as data is written, the database maintains an exact catalog of every label, field, type, value and relationship shape. Agents can read this catalog before querying, eliminating guesswork about what data exists.
The database accepts nested JSON documents, automatically linking nested objects as related records. It supports multiple query languages including SQL, openCypher, Gremlin and ISO GQL, all operating on the same data snapshot. Search capabilities include vector indexes (exact and HNSW), BM25 full-text search, and hybrid search combining both.
RushDB is available in two forms: a free open-source engine (Apache 2.0) you self-host as a single Rust binary, or RushDB Cloud, a managed service adding features like managed embeddings, natural-language search, relationship suggestions and team access. Both use the same underlying engine.
Listed capabilities
- Schema catalog automatically updated on every write with exact field names, types, values and relationship shapes
- Nested JSON documents converted to linked records in a single commit
- Multiple query languages: SQL, openCypher, Gremlin, ISO GQL, Mongo-style and native SearchQuery on same data
- Hybrid search combining vector (exact and HNSW) and BM25 full-text indexes in one query
- PostgreSQL and Neo4j protocol compatibility via wire protocols
- MVCC snapshot isolation for concurrent reads and writes
- Atomic transactions with write-ahead log durability
- Single Rust binary deployment with no additional services required
- RushDB Cloud managed service with embeddings and MCP hosting
- TypeScript and Python SDKs plus gRPC and HTTP APIs

Quick answers
What data can I put in?
JSON from applications, pipelines or agents including nested documents, arrays of records, events and payloads whose shape changes over time. Types are inferred per value and nested objects become linked records, with no schema to declare or migrate first.
Do I have to commit to a model or agent framework?
No. RushDB stores data, not prompts. Any model or framework can use it through TypeScript and Python SDKs, the MCP server, or HTTP. The self-hosted engine also speaks SQL over PostgreSQL wire protocol. Changing models does not move your data.
Is it a vector database?
It includes vector search (exact and HNSW), BM25 full-text search and hybrid search combining both, but vectors live on ordinary records with typed fields and relationships. One query can filter, traverse and rank instead of syncing a copy into a separate vector store.
What is the difference between the engine and RushDB Cloud?
The engine is the open-source database (Apache-2.0, single Rust binary) you self-host. RushDB Cloud runs the same engine managed for you and adds managed embeddings, natural-language search, relationship suggestions, hosted MCP with OAuth and team access. On self-hosted you bring your own embedding vectors.
What does “Database for AI” mean?
RushDB is a database: it stores records, relationships, and search indexes, with transactions and durable storage. “For AI” means two things it does for agents. Every write updates an exact catalog of labels, fields, types, values, and relationship shapes. And the same catalog can be read for just the records a filter matches. An agent can check both before it writes a query.
