Refract: the homepage

Refract is a TypeScript monorepo boilerplate built for SaaS founders who expect their products to evolve. It includes production-ready systems for billing, authentication, role-based access control, multi-tenancy, and background job processing—all architected with stable contracts behind adapters so you can swap infrastructure providers without rewriting product logic.

The codebase features 80%+ test coverage, explicit module boundaries designed for AI code tools, and everything pre-wired: Express + Apollo GraphQL backend, React frontend, Stripe billing engine, BullMQ and AWS SQS queue adapters, observability via Pino and StatsD, and local Docker development parity. You purchase a lifetime license by team size (Solo, Startup, or Agency tier) and own the source code forever—there are no runtime dependencies on Refract servers and no licensing checks.

Refract is built by Yoann Jaspar, who spent 15 years in software engineering, including roles at venture-backed Atrium and Loom (where he was Billing Tech Lead through the Atlassian acquisition). The architecture emerged from 12 months of turning real-world SaaS scaling lessons into a foundation designed to make the fifth pricing experiment as simple as the first.

Quick answers

  1. Why should I buy Refract instead of building my own SaaS foundation?

Building authentication, billing, permissions, queues, observability, deployment, testing and documentation well enough to evolve for years is difficult. Refract gives you a production-ready architecture built from real-world SaaS experience, so you can spend time building your product instead of rebuilding infrastructure.

  2. How is Refract different from other SaaS starter kits?

Most starter kits optimize for your first deployment. Refract optimizes for your fiftieth. Every major system is designed behind stable contracts, making future changes predictable instead of expensive rewrites.

  3. Do I own the code?

Yes. Refract is a one-time purchase, not a subscription. Once you purchase a license, you own the source code and can use it commercially according to your license tier, with no runtime dependencies on Refract servers or licensing checks.

  4. Will Refract lock me into its architecture?

No. Infrastructure concerns like payments, email, queues, caching and observability are abstracted behind TypeScript contracts. You can replace providers, remove modules or extend the platform without rewriting your application.

  5. Will AI coding agents understand this codebase?

Yes. Refract is structured with explicit architectural boundaries, strict TypeScript contracts and comprehensive AI documentation through AGENTS.md, enabling humans and AI agents to navigate the code consistently.
