Hearth is a private journaling app with an AI companion named Inkling. You can write entries, add photos and voice recordings, and Inkling can reflect on your day or chat with you like a friend who remembers your history. All content is encrypted on your device before upload.
The app offers a free Ember plan with unlimited entries and daily reflections. Paid plans add features like AI chat, voice entries, AI memory to search your past entries, and an optional public AI Twin chatbot. You can also connect your own AI assistants like ChatGPT or Claude to work with your journal.
Privacy is central to Hearth's design. In default mode, the company holds an encrypted spare key but your words are protected by policy. The free Private Vault mode removes that spare key, making decryption cryptographically impossible for the company. You can export all your writing anytime, and deleting your account erases all encryption keys, making entries permanently unreadable.

Quick answers
Is my journal really encrypted?
Yes. Every entry is encrypted on your device before it leaves it, in every mode. The server only stores ciphertext. Photos and voice notes are journal content too, so they receive the same encryption treatment.
Can I get my entries out of Hearth?
Yes, anytime. Go to Settings → Security and data → Export. Everything is decrypted on your device and saved as a file you keep. No request, waiting or permission is needed.
What does the AI actually see when processing my entries?
Only what a feature you used needs, only in the moment, and only if AI is on. A reflection sends that entry's text, gets an answer, and keeps nothing. Your writing never trains anyone's model. Inkling's memory is encrypted on your device before storage.
Do I have to use the AI?
No. AI is optional. You can keep writing and drawing with it switched off. Settings → Companion lets you disable it completely, and nothing breaks.
What's the difference between the default and Private Vault?
In the default managed mode we keep a sealed spare copy of your key, so signing in on a new device just works. That means we could technically decrypt your entries, and our policy is that we don't. We only ever do it in the moment, for a feature you asked for, keeping nothing. Private Vault mode removes that spare copy. Your passphrase becomes the only key, so we can't read your journal at all, no matter who asks. It's free, and you can switch it on in Settings → Security.
